DAVENPORT / NORTH SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — November 5, 2026. Drivers traveling Highway 1 near Waddell Beach should expect continued daytime one-way traffic control as Caltrans works to stabilize Waddell Bluffs. The department’s November 4 progress notice says crews are clearing loose rock material at the base of the steep bluff to improve slope stability and manage erosion.
What part of Highway 1 is affected?
Work is scheduled Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.–4 p.m. between post miles 36.3 and 37.5. Caltrans anticipates delays of up to 10 minutes, with message signs and traffic direction at the work zone. The bulletin does not describe a blanket 24-hour closure of Highway 1.
Project progress
Caltrans reports the north side of Waddell Bluffs is complete, while stabilization on the south side is approximately halfway done. The agency expects the remaining work to finish by the end of 2026, subject to conditions. These are construction progress figures, not a guarantee that the slope will never need additional maintenance.
Why this matters for the coast
Highway 1 provides a key travel connection for communities on the northern Santa Cruz coast. Even temporary lane restrictions can affect school, work and visitor travel where alternative routes are limited. Drivers should maintain extra distance near construction and consult Caltrans QuickMap for live status, particularly during winter storms.
